Which is the first engineering college established in India?

IIT Roorkee is placed at the first rank in the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 in the Architecture and Planning category. In the innovation, engineering, overall and research categories, IIT Roorkee also ranks among the top 10.

The Roorkee College, now known as the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, is India’s first engineering college. Established in 1847, it was initially named Roorkee College; however, in 1854, it was renamed Thomason College of Civil Engineering to honor its mentor, James Thomason.

The Thomason College of Civil Engineering was elevated to the University of Roorkee as the first Engineering University of independent India on November 25, 1949. On September 21, 2001, the university was converted into an IIT by the Government of India.

IIT Roorkee has 21 academic departments and centres offering 12 undergraduate courses in engineering and architecture, three dual degree programmes in engineering, and over 48 postgraduate courses in engineering, architecture, sciences, computer and mathematical applications, and business administration besides research programs at the doctoral level.

IIT Roorkee is placed at the first rank in the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 in the Architecture and Planning category. In the innovation, engineering, overall, and research categories, IIT Roorkee also ranks among the top 10. It is ranked at sixth place in the NIRF engineering and innovation categories, eighth place in the NIRF 2024 overall rankings and is placed in the ninth position in the NIRF research category.

Globally, it is ranked at the 335th position in QS World University Rankings 2025. In the QS WUR Ranking by subject, it is placed at the 51 to 70 bracket and in QS sustainability ranking, it is ranked at 387.

Meanwhile, IIT-Roorkee will announce the result of GATE 2025. Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national-level exam that is conducted annually to assess candidates for comprehensive understanding in various undergraduate-level subjects in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts, Humanities.

The qualified candidates can either take admission in IITs, NITs, IIITs and other colleges in Master of Engineering (ME), Master of Technology (MTech) and direct PhD programmes. They can also use their score to apply at various PSUs.
